Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and a Science and French teacher when she’s not playing music, singer-songwriter Kate Maki is about to release her third album, On High a collection of pastoral and old-time country-folk songs produced by Howe Gelb on his label, OW OM Records. Kate’s debut Confusion Unlimited and follow-up The Sun Will Find Us were both recognized as “Album of the Year” by the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards. She has appeared on the cover of such notable publications as NOW, XPRESS, and ECHO, and placed original tracks in Canadian films Weirdsville and Wilby Wonderful.

With this third album On High, Kate’s made an acoustic record and it’s a work of simple beauty. The playing is live and neither overplays or underplays and Kate has a conversational vocal style - a little like Lucinda Williams - that’s plaintive, welcome and warm. You can hear the space between the notes and the sighs between the chord changes.

Recorded by Dave Draves (Jim Bryson, Julie Doiron) at the Little Bullhorn studio in Ottawa, Ontario over a period of five days in March 2007, On High features Howe on piano and guitar, Dave on optigan and organ, Dale Murray (The Guthries, Cuff The Duke) on pedal steel and guitar, and Nathan Lawr (Royal City, Fembots) on drums and piano.

On High could remind you Neil Young’s After The Goldrush in that it touches emotions with effortless sentiment, there’s something disarming about her gently fluttering Iris Dement-like country-folk delivery. Pure and innocent as Canadian snow. Or something like that.
