Emily Asen : Proof LP

“Like the microphone to your heart,” is how Emily Asen’s music can best be described, and so she sings on her first full-length record Proof LP released on her own Violet Maiden label.
23 years old from Fairfield, Connecticut, Emily writes tightly crafted, folk-pop vignettes that listeners from all walks of life can identify with.
Of the album’s eleven songs, ten are Asen originals, including ‘Play With Fire’, ‘Treading Water’ and the title track, three of the album’s standouts. Asen also gives Coldplay the folk treatment, presenting a noteworthy cover of ‘Yellow’, and delivering it with her smooth and pleasing voice revealing Emily’s evolution as both musician and producer.
Emily’s influences range from Ani DiFranco to Coldplay, inspiring her to create an eclectic sound. She lovingly refers to her fusion of folk and indie rock as “neo-folk.” Though her music is accessible, her soundscape is unique. Emily’s thoughtful lyrics, honest songwriting, and innovative arrangements deliver a voice all her own.
Proof LP is a testament to her multi-instrumentalism and DIY philosophy. Produced, recorded, and engineered by Emily in her home-based studio in Fairfield, Connecticut, the album showcases Emily on every instrument and vocal track with the exception of drums. Emily partnered with local studio owner Grekim Jennings for drums and mixing, and with Alan Silverman (Aimee Mann, Norah Jones) for mastering. The album artwork was born from an interdisciplinary collaboration with visual artist Linda Jean Fisher of Peekskill, NY.
Since 2003, Emily has been developing a loyal audience through live shows around the Northeast, her home-recorded YouTube videos, and a dynamic MySpace page. She attracts fans from many countries including Canada, Australia, and England, in addition to the U.S. In 2007, she received Top Ten Honors from the Australian Songwriting Contest in the International Category for her song “Avalanche” off of Avalanche EP.
A recent graduate of NYU’s Music Business program, Emily will be studying for her masters this fall at SUNY Purchase’s prestigious Studio Composition program, of which Regina Spektor and Jenny Own Youngs are alums.
